First Quantum Minerals is currently working on its further expansion, including a standalone 25Mtpa processing plant that will increase copper production substantially.

The Kansanshi copper project is the development of a new open-pit copper mine at Kansanshi in north west Zambia, together with the associated investment in a new power transmission system. The mine is designed for the production of 60,000 t/y of copper cathodes and up to 70,000 t/y of copper concentrates for an initial lifetime of 16 years.

The Kansanshi Cu(-Au) deposit is located approximately 160 km west of the stratiform copper-cobalt deposits of the Zambia Copperbelt, in Zambia's Northwest province.
