In 2020, Vale received board approval for a long-sought expansion of the S11D iron ore mine and, with it, the expansion of the Carajas Railroad from one track to two.

The new mine, together with other projects planned in the region, will put southeast Pará on the same level as the Iron Quadrangle region in the state of Minas Gerais.
