You will not get compaction from dumping and running. I don't care what any geo-tech goof says. I do alot of building pads for a pole barn contractor and we do the floor prep for the mason. We place 4" of 3/4" stone and leave it about 3/4" high and when we run the plate over top, it compacts down to the elevation we need.

Compacting stone for basement floor/ not

Any granular with fines is not self compacting. Under DOT spec's 3/4" crushed limestone stone can be used as trench backfill and considered self compacting. This is 3/4" stone with no fines. Call any quarry, they will know what you want. Rounded or washed river stone is not necessarily a good choice, it rolls in place.
